GREAT COMEDY MOVIES of All Times Entrancing to Leave You Crying With Laughter – Best Comedy Movies for Laugh Riots to Entertain

Comedy movies are mood lifters, stress busters and the best possible facilitators for Laughing out as loud as you want with your legs up in the air, without offending the civilized ‘prim and propah’ section of the society and acting as goofy as you want! So, if you have been frustrated for the last few days on being reduced to an earthling who is all well mannered, with not a hair out of place, then here are some of the best comedy movies of all time made in Hollywood, to aid in your attempts to lose those cuff-lings and the polite smile. Go on and go mad with these best comedy movies in all time!

Best Comedy Movies Ever Made

Given the fact that the word humorous is a rather relative term and what is the funniest to me may come in as low as 9th in your list, I shall therefore maintain chronology as per the films’ dates of release. Since all of them are masterpieces that should be viewed at least once, you decide when to watch what, and in what order.

Some Like It Hot (1959)
Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It’s like Jell-O on springs. Must have some sort of built-in motor or something. I tell you, it’s a whole different sex!

A comedy very reminiscent of Shakespearean comedy plays and replete with famous movie quotes, a movie where two men Jerry (Jackman Lemmon) and Joe (Tony Curtis) take to dressing up like women named Daphne and Josephine respectively, in order to escape the mobsters headed by goon ‘Spats’ Columbo, responsible for the Chicago St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929. The men cross dress and join a girls’ band in Miami. But things get funnier when Joe is smitten by Sugar Kane Kowalczyk (Marilyn Monroe) a member of the same band but cannot reveal his true self due to obvious reasons. Jerry on the other hand, manages to draw the attention of a rich admirer Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown), who will back out at nothing. The film is brilliant with its final pursuit scenes and leaves a viewer in pain with laughter in the last seen when Osgood actually doesn’t seem to have a problem on being exposed to Daphne’s true gender and says, “Well, nobody’s perfect.”

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
We’re knights of the Round Table, we dance whene’er we’re able. We do routines and chorus scenes with footwork impec-cable, We dine well here in Camelot, we eat ham and jam and Spam a lot./ We’re knights of the Round Table, our shows are for-mi-dable. But many times we’re given rhymes that are quite un-sing-able, We’re opera mad in Camelot, we sing from the diaphragm a lot./ In war we’re tough and able, Quite in-de-fa-ti-gable. Between our quests we sequin vests and impersonate Clark Gable/ It’s a busy life in Camelot.

Now that the anthem of the Knights of Camelot has gripped your attention with the lyrics not really adhering to common knightly behavioral patterns, here’s why you should watch this film. It is primarily a spoof of all the legends of King Arthur (Graham Chapman) and his Round Table members with characters bizarrely named such as “Sir Robin the Not Quite So Brave As Sir Lancelot” (Eric Idle). This comedy is replete with hilarious movie quotes and gags which include the character of Dingo inquiring about the qualitative caliber of the scene and all the characters, from preceding as well as succeeding moments, springing up with their opinions, a criminally psychotic rabbit hell bent on killing people being harnessed by the indefeasible Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch and a police officer arbitrarily ending the film by blocking the camera lens from further filming!

Annie Hall (1977)
A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark.

Would I have to say more about the film if I just started with calling it a Woody Allen classic? The film is a depiction of the general course that love stories that flowered in the 1970s took, and depicts the ardent efforts of a pessimistic lover and an eccentric comedian Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) delving in flashbacks in order to dig out the moments that could have culminated and led to his break up with his girlfriend Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). One of the best comedy movies of all times and undoubtedly a must watch!

Airplane! (1980)
There’s no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

Doubtlessly one of the good movies to watch when bored, this movie tickles your funny bone to the extent of leaving you bleary-eyed with laughter tears. A spoof take on airplane disaster films, this movie sees the crew landing in trouble after the consumption of a fish delicacy leaves them all food poisoned. It then falls upon Ted Striker (Robert Hays) an ex-navy pilot to fly it back to an airport in Chicago. The film is full of funny movie quotes and gets even more hilarious when Striker, who quit flying after taking down several of his own men during a flying expedition in World War II and acquired a fear for anything airborne ever since, and had boarded the plane after much apprehension only to woo his girlfriend Elaine (Julie Hagerty) back, himself is gripped by fear that needed tending right away and sees his job attaining higher degrees of difficulty given the bizarre crew members and outré passengers. Truly one of the best comedy movies ever made.

Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
What kind of a host invites you to his house for the weekend and dies on you?

Watch Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman) as two idiots who are forced to make their dead murdered boss seem alive, as the frustrated mafia killer tries on and on to fulfill his task.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
I admire that honesty, Natalie, that’s a noble quality. Never lose that, because it often disappears with age, or entering politics.

A heart warming comedy that sees a divorced father Daniel Hillard (Robbin Williams) adopting the avatar of an Irish nanny called Mrs. Iphegenia Doubtfire, transforming himself into a woman everyday with the help of his make up artist sibling Frank (Harvey Fierstein), to be with his children everyday, after the court allows him to see his children only once a week. The film takes hilarious twists and turns in Hillards pursuit to keep his children happy and keep his identity hidden from his ex-spouse Miranda (Sally Field) as well as deal with Miranda’s latest love interest, the vile and conceited Stuart Dunmeyer (Pierce Brosnan).

Ready to Wear or Prêt-à-Porter (1994)
This is f***ing fruitcake pan. I mean…..is that fashion? I mean their message out there. You got lot of naked people wondering around here.

Tag-lined “A seductive and fashionable comedy!” and dubbed “an exuberant comedy” by the Rolling Stones, this tongue in cheek dark satire is brutally funny with its jabs at the world of fashion, in Robert Altman’s effort to reveal the true underbelly of the style industry. The film stars icons like Sophia Loren, Kim Bassinger, Julia Roberts, Rupert Everett. Among the variant types of comedy, this film belongs to the kind which ruffles up the gray cells to make you think, rather than only making room for thoughtless laughter.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
If I’m not back in five minutes…just wait longer.

A comedy movie list is literally incomplete without a Jim Carrey flick and therefore I give to you my favorite among all his other bests including “The Mask”, “The Truman Show” and of course “Bruce Almighty”. You have to see this movie to understand why it made it to the list. All I shall say is that Jim Carrey stuns not only with his gravity defying hairstyle but also with his instinctive ways of being a part of the animal world, bizarre and beyond the realms of understanding of any other human being. The sequel of this movie is equally enthralling and capable of literally inducing physical pain with laughter.

There’s Something About Mary (1998)
Who needs him? I’ve got a vibrator!

The usual geek falls for beauty love story with a killer Cameron Diaz mesmerizing with her looks and ‘a hung up on Mary even after 15 years’ nerdy Ben Stiller, this movie is a laugh riot.

Shrek (2001)
You might have seen a housefly, maybe even a super-fly, but I bet you ain’t never seen a donkey fly!

An out an out laugh riot where Donkey (Eddie Murphy) pushes Shrek (Mike Myers) out of his cocoon and overwhelming need to protect his solitary space, his swamp from intruders, with his self imposed friendship on the not so friendly and apparently heinous ogre. What ensues is a comic knight in the shining armor act and Shrek finding his lady love Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) after much ado.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Ah. Introduce people with thoughtful details. Perpetua, this is Mark Darcy. Mark is a prematurely middle-aged prick with a cruel raced ex-wife. Perpetua is a fat-ass old bag who spends her time bossing me around.

Believe me girls, you will identify with every tiny goof up that Bridget indulges in, in spite of all her attempts at the attainment of “inner poise” and protecting herself from manipulatively ravishing men. An adoption of Helen Fielding’s work of the same name and definitely one of the best comedy movies of all times, the film maneuvers around a woman’s quest to tackle problems related to advancing age, fluctuating weight and unyielding relationships. See Renée Zellweger at her best ever!

The Princess Diaries (2001)
Queen Clarisse Renaldi: “Amelia, you look so… young.
Mia: “Thank you. And you look so…
[Awkward pause at lack of finding appropriate non-offensive word]
Mia: “… clean.

A hilarious journey of a gawky teenager who one fine day finds out that she is the next heir in line of the country of Genovia. Obviously, pandemonium follows with her struggling to learn the ways of royalty, and yet trying to maintain the life of a normal teenager with the media constantly disrupting her already topsy-turvy world! See Anne Hathaway win hearts with her innocent exuberance as she remorphs from a crow to a swan and of course Julie Andrews, elegantly guiding her grandchild as Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
We never rush, we hasten.

This part sees the killer duo from the first part fight the illogical conventions of the society, without compromising on royal grace and poise. But with Amelia (Anne Hathaway), well problems are never far away. This time, all hell breaks loose when the to be queen falls in love with her competitor for the throne, Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) and that too after being betrothed to Duke of Kenilworth, Andrew Jacoby (Cullum Blue) for an impending arranged marriage in order to keep her throne!

The Incredibles (2004)
Greater good?’ I am your wife! I’m the greatest *good* you are ever gonna get!

The story of superhero family struggling with their urges to save the world again but forced to lead a normal suburban life. But when duty beckons and the world is endangered again, the Parrs transforms into the Incredibles again and restores peace and harmony.

The Pink Panther (2006)
Stop browbeating her! Can’t you see she is sexy?

Inspector Jacques Clouseau’s (Steve Martin) hilarious ways can only be believed when seen. See the clumsiest French inspector solving a murder case and uncovering the thief of the famous gem, the Pink Panther diamond in his unique and inconceivable style besides his attempts to learn English as a language and most importantly pronounce “hamburger” which for him is “damburgen”!

True, there are more such laugh riots that have entertained people over the ages but these are some of the best comedy movies of all times that I found entrancing. See them for yourselves to know why. Happy movie-buffing!!!

The most protean aspect of comedy is its potentiality for transcending itself, for responding to the conditions of tragedy by laughing in the darkness.” ~ Harry Levin.

Kidding Around with the King of Comedy Jim Carrey is used to being laughed at. In fact, he thrives on entertaining others. As a precocious young boy, he practiced pulling faces in the bathroom mirror — a talent that would later prove to be instrumental in his success — and performed self-created skits for his family. Unfortunately, his life wasn’t one smooth cruise to the top. The Canadian-born funnyman’s rags-to-riches tale is the stuff dreams are made of. Since his early smash hit Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the blockbuster movie roles just keep on coming. But Carrey isn’t content simply to play it safe and stick with the slapstick comedy roles he knows and performs so confidently. In fact, with releases such as The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, Carrey has challenged himself creatively and shown audiences that he is capable of demonstrating sensitivity and immense dramatic range. With his latest hit move, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, this shooting star’s future just keeps getting brighter!

The Jim Carrey Handbook – Everything You Need to Know about Jim Carrey

James Eugene "Jim" Carrey (born January 17, 1962) is a Canadian-American actor and comedian. Carrey began stand-up comedy in 1979, performing at Yuk Yuk’s in Toronto, Ontario. After gaining prominence in 1981, he began working at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles where he was soon noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield, who immediately signed him to open his tour performances. Carrey, long interested in film and television, developed a close friendship with comedian Damon Wayans, which landed him a role in the sketch comedy hit In Living Color, in which he portrayed various characters during the show’s 1990 season. Having had little success in television movies and several low-budget films, Carrey was cast as the title character in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective which premiered in February, 1994 making more than $72 million domestically 1]. The film spawned a sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), in which he reprised the role of Ventura. These higher-profile roles eventually led to his being cast as Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask (1994) for which he gained a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, and as Lloyd Christmas in the comedy film Dumb and Dumber (1994). Between 1996 and 1999, Carrey continued his success after earning lead roles in several highly popular films including The Cable Guy (1996), Liar Liar (1997), in which he was nominated for another Golden Globe Award and in the critically acclaimed films The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Both films earned Carrey Golden Globe awards. Since earning both awards- the only two in his three-decade career- Carrey continued to star in highly acclaimed comedy films, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) where he played the title character, Bruce Almighty (2003) where he portrayed the role of unlucky TV reporter Bruce Nolan, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), Fun with Dick and Jane (2005), and Yes Man (2008). Carrey has also taken on more serious roles including Joel Barish in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) alongside Kate Winslet and Kirsten Dunst, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination, and Steven Jay Russell in I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) alongside Ewan McGregor. This book is your ultimate resource for Jim Carrey. Here you will find the most up-to-date information, photos, and much more.
